New Community Fund for Canada’s 150th!

New Community Fund for Canada’s 150th builds community and encourages participation for the sesquicentennial

A new collaboration for Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation is providing funds for local registered charities with the aim of bringing people and places together to build community and activate a groundswell of local initiatives, activities, and events.

The Community Fund for Canada’s 150th is a collaboration led by Community Foundations of Canada in partnership with the Nanaimo Foundation, which is one of 191 community foundations within its national network. With the support of the Government of Canada and leaders from coast to coast to coast, this fund will engage Canadians in local projects that build community, inspire a deeper understanding of Canada, and encourage participation in a wide range of initiatives that mark Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. The Fund will be responsive to local priorities and will be accessible to all Canadians, including indigenous peoples, youth, groups that reflect our cultural diversity, and official language minority groups.

“Canada’s 150th is a historic moment with the power to strengthen our communities and our connection to one another,” said Ian Bird, President of Community Foundations of Canada. “The collaborative Community Fund for Canada’s 150th will spark thousands of initiatives and activities that bring out the best that Canada has to offer. The Fund will encourage all Canadians to contribute to their communities in a way that fosters a greater sense of belonging, inclusion, and reconciliation, leaving a lasting legacy for our communities and our country.”

“The Nanaimo Foundation is very excited to participate in this incredible opportunity,” said George Hanson, Grants Director with the Nanaimo Foundation. “Having access to this celebratory fund allows us to double our granting capacity for 2016/17 and allows the foundation to distribute these grants earlier than our usual cycle.”

The Nanaimo Foundation invites registered charities that operate within the geographical boundaries of Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District 68 to apply for the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th. Applications will be received from April 15th to May 16th via the Community Foundations of Canada’s website, where they will be reviewed locally, and funds will then be distributed in July 2016. Applicants can apply for up to a maximum of $15,000 towards capital projects that have a completion date by Jan 31st, 2018.

You Make Your Community – Social Services

In 2015, the Nanaimo Foundation was proud to support capital projects for the Nanaimo Family Life Association and the Gabriola Commons. Through the foundation’s community grants program, the support for these organizations was made possible due to the generosity of the community leaving legacies and endowments to the Nanaimo Foundation.

Nanaimo, You’ve Been Touched By A Random Act Of Kindness!

RAK Card - Template re-designRandom Act of Kindness Day® is a day to celebrate and encourage others to pay “acts of kindness” forward.

November 6th, 2015 marks the inaugural Random Act of Kindness Day in Nanaimo! Since 2008, this special day has brought Canadian communities together by engaging citizens in small acts of kindness and generosity.

Throughout our community, “kindness cards” and posters have been distributed to various businesses and local organizations to encourage people to perform a simple act of kindness for someone – a neighbour, a friend, a co-worker, or someone they don’t even know – and hand the card over to that person – encouraging him/her to do the same.

Acts of kindness don’t have to cost anything. From holding a door open for someone, sharing words of encouragement, saying hello to a neighbour – these are all the kinds of acts that you can “pay forward” on this special day.

Visit www.nanaimofoundation.com/random-act-of-kindness-day for more info and to see where you can pick up a stack of RAK Cards to share!

Carry out an act of kindness, with no expectation of reward or punishment. Safe in the knowledge that one day, someone somewhere might do the same for you.”
